Lata the Trendsetter

A lot is written about Lata Mangeshkar. The legend turned 79 recently.

When she started recording songs for the Hindi movies, the names of singers were not revealed on gramophone records or radio stations. When Ayaga Aanewala was played on the radio stations -- a number from movie Mahal -- letters started pouring in asking for the name of the singer. That started the system of announcing the name of the singer on air.

In 1956, the song Rasik Balma from the film Chori Chori won the Best Song Filmfare Award. Lata refused to sing it live in protest of absence of a Playback Singer category. The category was finally introduced in 1958. Though, separate awards for male & female singers were introduced later on.
